We were delighted to read this week that two of the "Four things we learned from the AAT Annual Conference" in Accountancy Age, came from accountingcpd's very own Sam Ellis. During the day, Sam is head of operations and finance at Interworks Europe, but at the weekends, and whenever he can slip away, he is one of the key architects of our popular Technology Updates Pathway.

Delegates heard from Sam about the benefits of data analytics, and the limitations of excel compared to other data analytics tools. Even on the subject of automation, his message was largely upbeat, emphasising the opportunities presented rather than the threats.

In other sessions, Oliver Fisher, deputy director of Making Tax Digital, was "absolutely confident of hitting the April 2019 deadline for VAT", and Penny Ciniewicz, of HMRC said that they were under no illusion about the scale of the task ahead of them: "Delivering a comprehensive digital service is a medium to long-term project given its complexity."

An upbeat 2 days was reinforced by AAT President, Nicky Fisher, in rightly positive mood:

"At AAT we have a mission statement of being bigger, better and bolder, and that's certainly what our Annual Conference delivers. This is the tenth time that our members have been able to network and expand their professional knowledge at our Conference, and feedback is always overwhelmingly positive."
